PROGRAM
Speaker Bios
Dr Adam Parslow
Dr Adam Parslow is the Microscopy Manager of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, an Honorary Fellow at The University of Melbourne and a Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University. Dr Parslow's research career is focused on the application of advanced optical imaging technologies for the development of new therapeutics and to further the understanding of disease models.
Dr Bryan Leaw
Bryan is a registered Australian and New Zealand patent attorney at the IP law firm FB Rice, practicing in the Biotechnology group. Bryan completed his PhD at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience, where he investigated brain nanocurrents and how they can lead to childhood seizures. Following this, Bryan was a post-doctoral researcher at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and the Monash Medical Centre, assessing the use of amnion epithelial cells in the treatment of cerebral palsy, as well as conducting clinical research in maternal health.
Dr Jennifer Payne
By day Dr Jennifer Payne is a research scientist at CSIRO where she works to prevent and treat antimicrobial resistant infections by combining bioengineering, microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry skills. While by night she is the CEO and founder of Curiosity Factory, a not for profit charity that runs STEMpals. STEMpals is a pen pal program for primary students, where each student is paired with their very own STEM professional to exchange handwritten letters across the year. STEMpal was born as Jen wanted to ensure our next generation was STEM literate and empowered to tackle the challenges they will face.
Dr. Karina Huynh
Karina Huynh received her PhD from the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, where she studied the role of antioxidant signalling in diabetic cardiomyopathy under the guidance of Dr Rebecca Ritchie and Dr Julie McMullen. She moved to London in 2013 and joined the Nature Reviews Cardiology team in 2014 as a locum Associate Editor. In mid-2015, she moved back to Australia, and is continuing her role as a Senior Editor of Nature Reviews Cardiology.
Dr. Drew Berry
Drew Berry is a biologist-animator renowned for his visually stunning, scientifically accurate animations of molecular and cellular processes. Beginning his career as a cell biologist, Drew is fluent in navigating technical reports and research data from scientific journals. As an artist, he transforms complicated scientific concepts into vivid and meaningful animated journeys. Since 1995, Drew has led biomedical animation within WEHI (Melbourne), Australia’s flagship for medical research. His work has showcased at the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, V&A and the Royal Institute of Great Britain. In 2011, he collaborated with Björk on her app-album and music video for the ‘Biophilia’ tour. Drew has received numerous awards, including an Emmy, a BAFTA, and the MacArthur Fellowship "Genius Grant”.
Recognition and awards:
Doctorate of Technology (hc), Linköping University Sweden, 2016
MacArthur Fellowship, USA 2010
New York Times “If there is a Steven Spielberg of molecular animation, it is probably Drew Berry” 2010
The New Yorker “[Drew Berry’s] animations are astonishingly beautiful” 2008
American Scientist “The admirers of Drew Berry, at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Australia, talk about him the way Cellini talked about Michelangelo” 2009
